Jedoch bietet sich dem Trainierenden durch die Weiterentwicklung des Mo-biltelefons, des sogenannten Smartphones, und seine zunehmende Bedeutung auf dem Mobiltelefonmarkt die Möglichkeit, Applikationen (Apps) auf dem telephone zu installieren, die die Funktion eines Laufcomputers kostengünstig übernehmen und dem Läufer noch weitere Funktionen zur Verfügung stellen, die herkömmliche Laufcomputer nicht beinhalten. Anfangs konnten die ersten Trainings-Apps lediglich zur Streckenmessung verwendet werden. Doch durch die Innovation bestimmter Hardwarekomponenten, auf die im weiteren Verlauf der Studie noch eingegangen wird, und die gleichzeitige Weiterentwicklung der software program, können Smartphones mittlerweile Daten zur Herzfrequenz weiterverarbeiten.
